62 year old male with right leg pain. Patient had complete blockage / occlusion of the right popliteal artery behind the knee that was limiting blood flow to the calf and foot. This severely limited the patient’s ability to walk.

Dr. Shirey was able to repair this blockage with atherectomy and angioplasty alone and no stent was required. This was performed at our state of the art outpatient facility with no need for the patient to go to the hospital.

This procedure was performed through a tiny access into the artery. The patient was able to return to normal activity the following day and no big incision or stitches were needed.

82 year old male with bilateral leg pain at rest and difficulty walking.

The patient had complete blockage of the artery in his right thigh from the groin to the knee.

Dr. Shirey opened the blockage and NO Stents were required.

Compare that with the patient’s left leg which was worked on by another doctor at a local hospital. The left leg has multiple long stents in the patient’s left thigh artery that have clogged after a short time. This is why it’s better to not place such long stents in the leg arteries if possible.

69 year old male with a 20+ year history of leg swelling. This patient has seen EIGHT different Physicians, including two “Lymphedema Specialists.” Nobody had checked this patient for central venous compression / stenosis until he saw Dr. Shirey. This patient was evaluated with lower extremity venography and central intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and was noted to have pelvic vein compression / stenosis which was treated with a stent. Pictures show marked decrease in the swelling over the next several weeks.

These photos show results after a three week follow up. This patient had non-healing ulcers on his toes due to severe blockages in the small arteries below the knee. This patient was facing multiple toe amputations which were avoided after Dr. Shirey opened the artery blockages below the knee. The patient’s toes continued to heal and the patient was able to return to work.

68-year-old male with bilateral lower extremity swelling and nonhealing ulcers involving both lower extremities requiring chronic wound care treatment.

The patient has a history of deep venous thrombosis and a remote history of a non-retrievable IVC filter placed elsewhere.

Venography revealed a non-retrievable IVC filter in position with an area of stenosis noted in the inferior vena cava. In addition, areas of stenosis/venous compression were noted in the iliac veins bilaterally. Also, a small amount of thrombus was noted beneath the IVC filter.

Intravascular ultrasound revealed a high grade stenosis/area of compression in the IVC beneath the filter and in the common iliac veins and external iliac veins bilaterally. Also, some thrombus was noted beneath the level of the IVC filter.

Dr. Shirey was able to endovascularly reconstruct the iliac veins and IVC with angioplasty and stent placement.

80 year old male with left lower extremity pain at rest and a non-healing ulcer involving the medial left foot. The patient underwent a failed attempt at repair by a Vascular Surgeon at a local hospital. The patient was facing amputation due to critical limb ischemia. The occluded artery was successfully repaired by Dr. Shirey here at Georgia Vascular & Interventional. Everyone deserves a second opinion to prevent amputation.

58 year old male with left leg pain and difficulty walking. The patient attributed his leg pain to normal aging. However, the patient had a severe blockage in the artery in his left thigh that was successfully repaired by Dr. Shirey. Now the patient is pain free and can walk normal.

65 year old male with right leg pain, right great toe discoloration and non-healing ulcer. Patient had complete blockage of the popliteal artery behind the knee. This was successfully repaired at our state of the art outpatient facility with no need for the patient to go to the hospital.

64 year old female presented to our office with sudden onset of severe right foot pain and discoloration. The patient developed decreased ability to walk and was confined to a wheelchair. This patient had a sudden loss of blood flow / circulation to the foot. This is called acute limb ischemia and if not treated urgently can result in gangrene, amputation or limb loss. This was successfully repaired by Dr. Shirey and blood flow was re-established to the foot. The patient’s symptoms resolved and no amputation was needed

60 year old female with acute onset of back pain after fall. Patient underwent MRI of the thoracic and lumbar spine which revealed an acute compression fracture at the T10 level with a chronic compression fracture at the T11 level. Patient was unable to walk without the assistance of a walker and she was unable to perform her daily activities at work due to severe pain. Patient underwent balloon kyphoplasty at the T10 level performed in our office as an outpatient procedure and achieved complete pain relief which allowed her to return to work in less than a week.
